Planning For Christmas - Practical Tips To Decrease Stress And Save Money
This article by Kit Marsters provides some good advice to take some of the stress out of the whole Christmas process - and save you money at the same time!
It is that time of year again. Its a time of year that seems to happen upon us earlier and earlier - the shops are stocking up on Christmas cards and tree decorations, even if its still a few weeks until Halloween. This can make the biggest Christmas Holiday person stop in their tracks, wondering why, three months before the actual celebration, we should already start singing Jingle Bells. Still, there is something to say for this premature reminder.
There are many amongst us who wait until the very last moment to do their Christmas shopping. This can make the event more of a hassle and a cause of stress rather than a pleasant experience. Some of us are worn out and highly strung when the actual day arrives. And some of us wonder why we go through all this, year in year out.
A lot of this stress can be avoided. Planning ahead, even this early on, is not as silly as it may seem. At the very least its a good time to gather information on what people might like to receive this year and if they have any plans for the holidays. With workplaces enquiring about peoples end of year activities well in advance, most will book any trips away as early as possible. This also tends to save money, so its a sensible thing to do.
If a family member or friend has had their eye on an item for quite a long time now, they are not likely to purchase it before Christmas. They may be hoping to receive it as a gift, instead. If you are given hints and clues, pay attention to them. At least you will be making someone happy and your search for the perfect present is made that much easier.
This may sound harsh, but if your credit card tends to be maxed out because of Christmas purchases it may be time to re-evaluate what Christmas means to your family. Is it a time to celebrate the birth of Christ? In that case, what do overly expensive presents have to do with it? Is it a gathering of loved ones spending some quality time together? You dont need expensive presents for that either.
Some people complain that Christmas has become too commercial, but it can only be too commercial if we allow it to be so. There is little point in spending lots of money on a present that is discarded and gathering dust soon after. Gifts from the heart, as cheesy as this may sound, are far more valuable. A thoughtful gift doesnt need to cost a lot of money. It is, indeed, the thought that counts because you show you know the other person and have taken into consideration what they would actually like.
If you are clever at a craft, dont be afraid to share your skills and make some presents yourself. Theres nothing wrong with this and nothing to be embarrassed about. A hand-made present shows you have taken the time to create something for someone. Its an act of love and care and you just cant go wrong with that.
And, because hand-made presents do take time, it is wise to start early with your creations instead of having the pressure of time later on. At the very least, you could create a list of projects and start gathering materials. You will know best how long each project takes.
Another bonus of planning ahead is that it allows you to spread out expenses over a longer period of time. This eases some of the financial pressure often experienced in December and January. It may be that something catches your eye when you are in a shop or wandering around the market, and it could make a perfect gift for someone you know. If you can afford it at the time, it doesnt hurt to pick it up there and then. Its one less present to buy. Of course, this does mean you need to find a safe place to hide it, but that can be fun as well.
All in all, its not the time yet to start singing Christmas songs (unless you want to). But it could just be that the festivities will be a lot more enjoyable this year, with a bit of planning…
