Interviewing a Glitz Girl!

by Ginger John

Interviewer: Is everyone as crazy about the Roller Doodles as my customers?

Ginger John: Absolutely! I love the Roller Doodles and sales indicate that most people who run into them love them just as much as the two of us!

Interviewer: What happened to the Glitz Netz? I miss it!

Ginger John: It’s not in our current product line, but it was a fun item and I’ll be sure to bring it up when we meet to discuss our next fabulous line!

Interviewer: How did the three Glitz Girls become the three Glitz Girls? Have you always known each other?

Ginger John: Laura lives less than a mile from me and Erin is an old friend of her’s. So the most basic answer is that Laura brought the three of us together and it just seemed to work out. We all wanted to do something and we discovered that together…we could do it!

Interviewer: Tell me about the husbands…are they involved? Supportive?

Ginger John: Initially, I think they all had the “pat the wife” on the head attitude and tell her she can do what she wants to do, but at this point we’ve got them pretty involved. They’re all giving us business advice and attending the shows with us; it’s very sweet how supportive and encouraging and proud they are of all of us.

Interviewer: Do the three of you get together just to scrapbook?

Ginger John: Not as often as we’d like. We’re all so busy doing the “business” end of the things that we sometimes miss the reason we started the company in the first place, but we did just sit down this morning and work on a project…a Glitz Acrylic Clock. We’re thinking about offering classes soon. It was really fun. We make sure to set aside time like that just to enjoy the products and their possibilities so we can be reminded of the basic enjoyment we each get out of scrapbooking!

Interviewer: What do you like to eat and/or wear when you get together to scrapbook?

Ginger John: Well…I’m a Dr. Pepper girl. I always have one sitting with me when I scrapbook. Erin and Laura lean towards chocolate. This morning the chocolate treat was provided by Laura…she made no bake cookies. They were really good!

Interviewer: I know that you like digital scrapbooking. What advice would you offer to those who have never gone digital?

Ginger John: If I could say anything…I’d say, “Just try it!” It’s intimidating to start out, but it’s so fun once you get over that hump. I started out a couple years ago knowing next to nothing about Photoshop. I took a couple Jessica Sprague tutorials to help me get started and now I’ve switched over almost completely! It’s just so amazing to me that I can have all my scrapbook supplies on CD’s and when I create layouts they just go nicely into a little folder titled “PRINT”. Then I can print them on my wide format printer or order them from Costco or Shutterfly. I will say that using the Create A Cart CD is a really good way to get started on digital. For some reason it’s not quite as intimidating to make a card as it is to make a full layout.

Interviewer: Which line of Glitz is your favorite to play with?

Ginger John: My favorites change every time we put out a new line, but one that I have a soft spot for is the Rhapsody collection. The peacock is one of my favorites. I’ve done some fun stuff with that little guy! And I really love the Camelot, probably because I always find it more difficult to discover a great, fun “boy” line!

Interviewer: What is one thing you think every scrapper should know?

Ginger John: I guess…don’t forget the purpose behind the fun of scrapbooking. Make sure you’re recording those memorable moments in a way that you’ll find meaningful in the future.

Interviewer: What’s your favorite part about being a part of Glitz Design?

Ginger John: The shows! Heading out to the CHA shows is just exciting. It’s fun to meet all the great people who work in this industry and to stare in awe at the massive amount of creativity gathered all in one spot.

Interviewer: What’s the hardest part about being a Glitz Girl?

Ginger John: The hardest part about running any business is probably keeping the balance necessary to keep the company successful while still succeeding in your personal life. In addition to all my Glitz responsibilities I’m also a mom and a wife and keeping a balance is something that I have to work at daily.

Interviewer: Tell me about the Glitz Design website? It’s such a fun place to visit. Is it what you initially envisioned?

Ginger John: I actually do love the way the website turned out. I think it’s fun and fulfills its purpose at the same time which is what we were aiming for from the start. We continually have new ideas so STAYING satisfied with the website sometimes seems difficult, but as a whole I think it turned out wonderfully.

Interviewer: Who do you most admire in the scrapbooking industry?

Ginger John: That’s an impossible question! There are so many people to admire. I admire the relentless creativity of the designers who continue to find new and exciting ways to use the products available out there. I admire the retailers who work with scrappers on a day to day basis. There’s such an overwhelming amount of talent in this industry that it’s hard to take it all in.

Interviewer: Chocolate or candy?

Ginger John: I often go for both, but if I had to pick I’d go chocolate!

Interviewer: Diet or regular?

Ginger John: No diet for me…I prefer mine loaded!

Interviewer: When do you get inspired creatively?

Ginger John: When I see other people being creative it makes my juices start to flow. Or when I go shopping. Or when I watch TV sometimes…Could my answer be that it depends on my mood?

Interviewer: Do you have a movie that’s your favorite?

Ginger John: Okay…you’re probably think I’m a bit weird, but I love Willow. I watched it growing up and it continues to be that movie that I throw in when I want some background noise.

Interviewer: What do you aim for when you create layouts?

Ginger John: I want them to see the story behind the picture! First and foremost I want my children to be able to look at it and basically use it as a journal for our lives; something they can look back on in the years to come!

Interviewer: Is there a scrapbooking rule you like to follow?

Ginger: Well, since I have the need to tell a story…I say journaling is a must!

Interviewer: What is one thing you would tell someone who has dreams of doing what you have done?

Ginger John: It can be difficult, but it’s worth it! Go for it and give it your best shot and no matter what…you can always know that you did it.
